“What to expect: Knee and Hip Pain leading to Replacement “was the topic of our PNA-IN Fall Educational Conference held last October 19, 2018 at the Community Hospital North ‘s Professional Building Multi Service Classroom. The speaker was Divina Reyes, FNP, BC of IU Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Methodist Hospital at Indiana University Health.

 

The evening started with registration and socialization while enjoying a sumptuous pasta dinner provided by Daniel Ulselman, manager of Olive Garden Castleton c/o Karleen McGill. After dinner a short welcome address by our current president, Chuchi Esteleydes was followed by an introduction of the guest speaker by Mattie Upano.

 

The educational presentation was very informative. Ms. Reyes talked about the pathophysiology, symptoms, management and treatments of Osteoporosis. She elaborated on the indications of knee and hip replacement. and what to expect postoperatively. The audience participated actively by asking numerous questions specially regarding their personal experiences related to their previous knee and/or hip replacements.

 

There were 42 attendees, the most we have ever had in our Educational Conferences. It included eight University of Indianapolis, one IUPUI and one Ball State University BSN Nursing students, nurses from Community Health North, Indiana University Hospital at IU Health, St. Francis South Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center, and other retired nurses and people from the community. 

 

After the questions and answer session, Steve Nelson, Director of Adult Education and Diversity Programs of Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) spoke briefly regarding the multiple programs available at IWU.
